The Art of Sun Care ☀️

Effects of the Sun : UVA and UVB Rays

The sun is one of the main sources of life and, with the right amount of exposure, provides many benefits for the body. However, excessive sun exposure can carry serious risks for the skin. One of these risks is sunburn. The sun's rays contain electromagnetic radiation known as ultraviolet (UV) rays. These UV rays are divided into two main categories, UVA and UVB.

So what are UVA and UVB?

UVA and UVB rays are different spectrums of sunlight reaching human skin. UVA rays can cause DNA damage, which can increase the risk of skin aging and wrinkles as well as skin cancer from sunlight exposure. [1]

UVA Rays: UVA rays are long wavelength rays that can penetrate deeper into the skin surface and reach the lower layers of the skin.

UVB Rays: UVB rays have a short wavelength with higher energy and often interact with tissue on the skin surface.

UVB rays are the rays that cause sunburn and can lead to tanning and redness in the upper layers of the skin.

After-Sun ( Post-Sun ) Skin Erythema

Post-sun exposure skin redness occurs as a response to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun ( especially UV-B ) . UV rays are a part of sunlight and can penetrate the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). These rays can trigger the formation of free radicals, which can cause changes in DNA and lead to skin damage.

UVI ranges from 0 to 11, with higher values meaning a higher risk of skin damage caused by UVR. [1]

The primary mechanism behind skin redness involves initiating an inflammatory response when the skin is exposed to UV rays [3].

When UV rays damage the skin, skin cells (particularly epidermal cells known as keratinocytes) initiate a series of biochemical reactions.

Another significant factor is the production of melanin.

In fact, most of the melanin in the skin is found in keratinocytes, where it accumulates and acts as a "natural sunscreen" protecting the skin against incoming UV photons [2].

UV rays increase melanin production in skin cells. Melanin is the dark pigment of the skin and acts as a mechanism to protect the skin from UV rays [2].

Therefore, as the skin is exposed to the sun, it produces more melanin, resulting in a reaction called “tanning”.

→ However, in some cases, this tanning can lead to redness (erythema) because the skin has been exposed to excessive amounts of UV rays, triggering an inflammatory response.

In conclusion, post-sun exposure skin erythema is a result of the inflammatory response to UV radiation exposure.

Rebirth After the Sun 🌤️

After sun exposure, it is very important to soothe, moisturize and heal the skin and prevent future damage.

After-sun care should be as much a priority as protecting skin from the harmful effects of the sun. Relieving and healing any irritation that may occur after sun exposure is essential for overall skin health.

In after-sun care, natural ingredients such as aloe vera and beta-glucan not only protect the skin from the harmful effects of the sun, but also soothe, moisturize and helps heal.
